Teaching and Learning

At Grandchester State School, our teaching and learning practices are built on evidence-based approaches that ensure every child is known, supported and challenged to achieve their personal best. Our small-school setting allows us to create meaningful learning relationships and tailor instruction to the needs of each individual learner.

Our Pedagogical Approach

Explicit Instruction

Explicit Instruction is the cornerstone of our pedagogy. Lessons follow a clear and predictable structure so students know what they are learning, how to be successful, and why the learning matters.

Our explicit instruction model includes:

  • Clear learning intentions and success criteria

  • Teacher modelling (“I do”)

  • Guided practice with feedback (“We do”)

  • Independent practice (“You do”)

  • Checking for understanding throughout the lesson

  • Daily review to strengthen retention

This approach supports strong academic growth, confidence, and mastery of skills across all year levels.

Science of Reading

Our literacy practices are aligned with the Science of Reading, ensuring students develop strong foundational skills in decoding, fluency and comprehension.

Key elements include:

  • Systematic synthetic phonics

  • Daily review of previously taught sounds

  • Decodable texts for early readers

  • Explicit vocabulary instruction

  • Morphology and spelling patterns

  • High-frequency word fluency

  • Structured writing routines

This approach ensures all children learn to read accurately, confidently and with understanding.

Engaging, Purposeful Learning

We believe learning should be meaningful, active and enjoyable. Our teachers design learning experiences that:

  • Connect to real-world contexts

  • Encourage questioning and exploration

  • Build curiosity and creativity

  • Include hands-on, practical and collaborative activities

  • Provide opportunities for student voice and leadership

We aim to motivate and inspire students to become lifelong learners who approach challenges with persistence and confidence.

Small School Advantage

Our multi-age setting allows us to:

  • Group students flexibly for targeted teaching

  • Extend and support learners at their point of need

  • Develop strong, supportive relationships

  • Create a safe, inclusive learning culture

  • Celebrate every student’s achievements

Teachers know their students deeply and tailor instruction accordingly.

High Expectations for All Learners

We set high expectations for achievement, effort, behaviour and engagement. This includes:

  • Clear routines and consistent expectations

  • Behaviour expectations aligned with our school rules:
Best Effort, Be Safe, Be Respectful

  • Regular progress monitoring and feedback

  • Collaborative problem-solving with families

  • Differentiation to ensure every student experiences success

Learning Environment

Our classrooms are calm, consistent and structured. We prioritise:

  • Predictable routines

  • Minimal distractions

  • Visual supports and learning walls

  • Opportunities for success every day

  • Respectful relationships between staff and students

Our goal is to ensure every child feels safe, valued and ready to learn.
